Ida Awuni

Ida Awuni

Ida Awuni is a tertiary graduate in accountancy who developed her childhood interest in fashion into a business under the brand name IDA.
As a child Ida would sketch clothes as a way of experimenting with her own ideas of how popular styles ought to look. She developed a strong sense of her own style overtime, and continued to apply this style sense to popular fashion trends throughout her teens and into adulthood.
She started IDA ARTISANS in 2016 when she began wearing her own SMOCK FABRIC designs popularly known as FUGU, and found a thriving demand for it among her friends.
“I was inspired to use fashion to project my culture and people, and to add a different touch and style to the smock fabric designs, popularly knows as Fugu or Batakari”, she says. Her style projects the rich cultural and artistic heritage of the people of the Upper East Region of Ghana, where she hails from and their values: courage, hardwork and ambition. The distinct visual style of Ida’s creations are made from luxury Artisan produced materials, using age-old traditional methods of production. Among her chief influences she says, “my work is influenced by the rich colour and aesthetic of the people of Northern Ghana and in later years, fashion houses like Nallem and Christie Brown”.
In the next five years, Ida hopes to build Ida Artisans into an internationally recognised brand, that is popular on international fashion runways and is featured on the covers of fashion magazines like Vogue and Glamour.

Accra Fashion Week 2017 Scheduled For 3-8th October; Designer Registration Now Open

Accra Fashion Week 2017 is scheduled for the 3-8th October 2017 as announced by the organizers, and it just opened up registration for designers, buyer, media and more. The venue is still yet to be confirmed as they are yet to decide which offer will work best for the international event set to take place in Accra, Ghana.

This year’s fashion extravaganza is dubbed ‘The Buyers Opportunity’. This is based on the ethos that Ghanaians and African designers as a whole need to take the approach of realizing their brand’s worth, and applying it to their business and showcasing it as such on the day of their AFWk show. And in the direction fashion is moving in today, it is more of an opportunity for the local boutiques and international buyers to engage in business with African designers.

“The only difference between western brands and ours is no longer the quality, it’s simply just the branding, and this year we will see that level up, so its really an opportunity for the stores to start looking to Africa” stated Nana Tamakloe “By the end of 2017 you will really be a disgrace as a boutique owner if you are not stocking African fashion brands, especially if you are based in Africa. It’s no more about prints, or headwraps, that’s nice. But the question is what African brand is it. That’s what matters.”

Accra Fashion Week 2016 made a gracious introduction last year in 2016 with the theme from Batik2Boutique. Filling up 3 days of fashion which they are thankful to the media for. The organizers put the event through with the purpose of encouraging local stores in Ghana to become more receptive to the home grown fashion in Ghana.

The organizers state “The work to get Ghanaian products into our stores is not an over night process, in consideration of the boutique owners, they also need to make sales, so even though we managed to get their interest, before they take on the work of our designers the question is how well branded are the designers? How ready are they for mass production? What guarantees our stores people will walk in them to buy their clothes”

“The bottom line is this kind of responsibility is one for the government, but since we don’t have that kind of push here, we all have to pull it together as Ghanaians. But do believe once we surpass this, we will witness enormous amounts of money and jobs that will be created for our nation through the textile and fashion sectors.” Abigail, AFWk Secretary.

Grace Quaye Covers The ‘Industry Rebels’ issue of FashionGHANA.com Magazine In Clothes By Bri Wireduah

0

Grace Quaye made headlines as she scooped the title ‘Face of Accra Fashion Week 2016’ circulating her face in both local and international press. Today Grace Quaye covers our ‘Industry Rebels’ issue of FashionGHANA.com Magazine in clothes by Bri Wireduah and FashionGHANA.com. The first cover we have produced in two years.

The front cover, shot by Nana Tamakloe, was inspired by the historical image of Huey P Newton, American freedom fighter and founder of the Black Panther Party, sitting on what is known as a king’s/Queen’s chair. The image was recreated to celebrate Grace Quaye’s reign as a new queen in the modeling world and also to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Black Panther Party, which was well fitting of the issue ‘Industry Rebels’.
