Accra Fashion Week 2020 Scheduled For 10th-13th December: Here Is What To Expect

This year, Accra Fashion Week broke the record to be Ghana’s first event to stream over 2million views on youtube (as seen at https://www.youtube.com/c/AccraFashionWeek/about) placing us in the best position for what is to come this December!

Due to the pandemic and city lockdown, Our Chilly Rainy edition in March was cancelled with dates postponed to 10-13th December 2020, for a session dubbed VIRTUAL REALITY.

The event is still set to hold as normal with a prestige set of guests in attendance, however, it will also be streamed live across the Accra Fashion Week’s youtube page with 10,000 subscribers, as well as via FashionGHANA.com on Facebook with 1 million followers.

Despite the beautiful ambience that will be set for the guests at an undisclosed location in Airport City, Accra, the virtual audience watching from around the world may just be treated to a beautiful surprise via edits.

The event will kick off from Thursday with a semi-final show of the Kimimi Designer Fabric competition. Followed by Friday with the Welcome Party x Face of Accra Fashion Week 2020 Semi-Finals, before the main runway events on Saturday & Sunday.

The virtual reality will set its path to open a new e-commerce approach to runway fashion & Design activities utilizing the online shopping space on the Accra Fashion Week website at www.AccraFashionWeek.org/boutique

PRESS RELEASE: Accra Fashion Week CR20 Suspended Due To Covid 19 Outbreak

FashionGHANA.com confirms that the Chilly Rainy edition of Accra Fashion Week 2020 set for March 26th-30th, will be canceled. All expected runway activities and participating designers will be postponed until October 1st-5th, 2020 where we can promise an even more explosive show.

The reasons being is due to the Corona Virus epidemic. Although we are fully aware that Ghana at the moment is safe from the Corona Virus, we do not believe now will not be the best time to execute the event that hosts such a large attendance of international guests. Accra Fashion Week today stands as a grand key event in tourism for Ghana, with over a 100 foreign participants including guests from all over the world consistently in attendance.

The event, at times hosting upto 30 countries on the runway in Ghana, something that isn’t been done anywhere else. This year we were scheduled to host 16 foreign countries on the runway. Unfortunately 6 have pulled out due to uncontrollable circumstances in their home country, and a good number of the remaining designers from abroad are in fear to travel.

As Africa’s most popular fashion event, we believe it is our role to take full responsibility in consideration of our participants, guests and the nation as a whole to embrace safety first. It will be of much regret to FashionGHANA.com and a damaging cause to the Accra Fashion Week brand if the event is to play any role in the contribution towards the spread of the Corona Virus, especially in Accra, Ghana. The decision was concluded after much discussions with the remaining participating designers, of which all decided postponing the showcase to October was preferable.

With the exclusion of the major runway shows that includes both the local and foreign designers, FashionGHANA.com will still host a fashion get-together scheduled on the Saturday 28th of March 2020. Details will soon be published on the website schedule page. We are gratefully sorry for any inconvenience cause to any of our audience and followers, especially foreign guests whom have already booked flights and hope the wait will be worth while. And most of all we would like to thank our sponsors Kimimi, Hyundai, Pulse, 2nd Image and Confidence Models for their understanding and patience.

A New Era Of Luxury Fashion Is Emerging, It’s Ethical, It’s Principled & It’s African!

0

Many African designers try to find refuge in imitating the concept of luxury fashion as per what they witness by the major fashion brands following the simple rules such as large social media following, being featured in Vogue and publishing images of luxury style influencers wearing their garments on their status.

This is all essential to creating a particular image of which might get you some sort of respect in certain sectors of the industry, but it is a total miss of the goal post for African fashion, designers and creatives.

In the west, defining your status of luxury depends on which fashion brand you are wearing. To be more specific, which item of the latest collection of the luxury brand you are wearing. In all honesty some ladies are rocking a gucci bags from their 10 year old runway collection thinking they are instyle because it’s simply gucci.

However, there is a new age and it has nothing to do with the said brand names. In fact the said brand names we have long heard of in Vogue doesn’t matter here in Africa. What matters is really what it boils down to, and that’s how luxurious your outfit actually looks. But even more so, there is also a growing aesthetic and authenticity about African fashion that defines it’s class and it can’t be duplicated.

Some brands are already really defining the concept of luxury when it comes to Africa. Ignore that basic lack of creativity we saw on the Dior Cruise, the real creative end of African fashion and African prints is far ahead, and below are some samples of the new age of Luxury African fashion soon to find it’s core identity.

Just like Afrobeat music, the only noticeable identity it maintain is the fact that it is African. You can not point out it’s uniqueness in the sound of the beats, because that various from RnB dancehall and it is almost exactly the same sound. You can not trace it by the content of the music because that is very much the same to all pop songs out there, and neither can you trace it simply down to the accents, but when you hear Afrobeat African music you know it just is.

And this is the uniqueness of African fashion, it isn’t African because it is print, or because it has cowry shells in it, it is African because the whole composure and essence is bared in the roots of the creator. And therefore defining the luxury aspect of it. Our luxury fashion is accumulated from royals, traditions, modern designs shaped by our day to day lives and couture. Dior will need to hire more than a few designers to emulate this.

Africa needs to take hold of it’s identity and trends, and home grown events and magazines is what makes this a reality. By hailing mainstream brands that are heavily rooted in racism is to give the key to players outside of the entity of which African fashion was born in.
